| Enchanted landscape of Lake Misurina |
Due to the publications of travel books, but mostly because of the new road and railway connection with Milano and Venice the village witnessed enormous growth of tourist coming to get refreshment in the mountains.
At the beginning of the 20th century about 20 hotels hosted several thousand visitors a year.
Modelled after St.Moritz the resort became so popular and developed to plan the winter olympics, suspended during the time of WWII. after the War finally Olympics were held in Cortina in 1956. The village and nearby Lake Misurina became the symbol of high life with numerous movies made around the Tofane and Faloria mountains.
Today Cortina is still the icon of Dolomites, and if the skiers can find enough of snow there, there are bus connections with Civetta, Alta Pusteria, and Arabba with slopes leading to other Sella Ronda ski regions.
The main skiing area stretches under Tofane. On the other side of Cortina the Faloria range offers some interesting black slopes and the area of Snowpark Faloria is run by the specialist from the local Snowboard School, giving the private lessons also directly on the slopes.
The skibus runs between Cortina and Passo Falzarego with another interesting skiing zone.
The area between Auronzo and Misurina is chosen by cross-country lovers, which have also the long track leading to Dobbiaco used during popular Dobbiaco-Cortina Ski Marathon competitions.
With the remodeled premises of Winter Olympics Cortina offers the wide range of traditional Winter Sports, and some unorthodox ones, like polo on snow.
